Darkness to Light

“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” Ephesians 5:8-11

God changes a person when they are saved. I know that to be true from the Scriptures and from experience. A salvation that doesn’t change a person is unscriptural and not worth having. Please consider a couple of quotes from C. H. Spurgeon and A. W. Tozer concerning Biblical salvation. – Shawn

How horrible to contemplate a church full of persons who have been pardoned but who still love sin and hate the ways of righteousness. And how much more horrible to think of heaven as filled with sinners who had not repented nor changed their way of living. A familiar story will illustrate this. The governor of one of our states was visiting the state prison incognito. He fell into conversation with a personable young convict and felt a secret wish to pardon him. “What would you do,” he asked casually, ‘if you were lucky enough to obtain a pardon?” The convict, not knowing to whom he was speaking, snarled his reply: “If I ever get out of this place, the first thing I’ll do is to cut the throat of the judge who sent me here.” The governor broke off the conversation and withdrew from the cell. The convict stayed on in prison. To pardon a man who had not reformed would be to let loose another killer upon society. No Great Thing

2 Corinthians 11:13-15

For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

The devil is not stupid. When he entices people to sin, he normally wraps sin in a pretty package.

When he tempts someone to use drugs, he usually doesn’t do it with a heroin addict who sells her body or a toothless mindless meth head.

When he entices a young person to drink, he usually doesn’t introduce them to an old drunk lying in the gutter.

Paul tells the church in Corinth that when Satan sends forth his ministers, his preachers, they appear as ministers of righteousness.

Satan himself can be transformed into an angel of light.

Anyone who preaches another Christ or preaches another gospel is what the Apostle Paul labeled a false apostle or a deceitful worker.

We must always be on our guard. We must always judge everything by the Word of God.

Just because they are famous does not mean they are Biblical.

Just because they are uplifting or encouraging does not make them right.

Just because they have a large following does not mean that they are from God.

False prophets almost always say things that are true but they always throw in a good dose of false along with it.

Matthew Henry said concerning these false teachers; “They would be as industrious and as generous in promoting error as the apostles were in preaching truth; they would endeavour as much to undermine the kingdom of Christ as the apostles did to establish it.”

Jesus is a Life Changing Saviour!

“But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” Romans 6:17-18

A true Christian is someone who was once the servant of sin but now has obeyed the gospel and has been loosed from his or her slavish master to serve a new Master. As one modern song writer put it, “I have felt Him loose the chains of sin and set my spirit free, Yes I know what Jesus did for me.” or from a hymn written many years ago, “Thine eye diffused a quickening ray—I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.” Jesus is a life changing Saviour!

“THERE ARE MANY who want to be saved from the consequences of their sin, who do not want to be saved from the love of it.

Many want to be delivered from sin’s curse and sin’s wages, who do not want to bow their neck to the yoke of Christ.

There are many who are attracted by the Gospel message and see the way of salvation, who are still possessing a craving for this present evil age.

How great the need for care, lest by an inadequate presentation of the truth of the Gospel we deceive these souls into a false profession.

There is a grave danger that many people will make a mistake of substituting an emotional religious crisis for a born-again experience.

To preach Christ as Saviour without preaching Christ as Lord, makes a mockery of the Gospel and the entire Christian life.

There must be true repentance. “If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (I John 2: 15). – Missionary, James Stewart

Confusing Testimonies

 “And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:”  Acts 26:16-19

“By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.” Hebrews 11:5

I have been around Baptist churches since 1975. I have heard myriads of testimonies. If you are a Christian you have a testimony. Some people tell of being saved from a terrible life of sin. Some tell of being saved from self-righteousness and dead religion. Regardless of our background, we were all dead in trespasses and sins. We were all the servants of sin. We were all the children of wrath. Every born again believer has a testimony.

The Apostle Paul told the church at Corinth: “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” {I Corinthians 6:9-11}

The Bible teaches that when a person is truly saved, Jesus Christ changes their life. He makes them a new creature with new desires and new dislikes. Paul said that before his conversion he did “many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth”. Because most Baptists believe in “eternal security”, often times it is said, “You Baptists think you can get saved and live any way you want to.” I believe that to be true in my own experience…but God has changed my “want to”. Paul told the Corinthians “and such were some of you.” Paul is basically saying, “You used to live that way, but now Jesus Christ has changed your life”.

I sincerely believe that what some call “eternal security” is a stench in the nostrils of the lost world…lost people know better.

Many people who claim to know Christ would agree with what I’ve said so far. Most folks believe that true Christianity is life changing {at least in theory}.  The Bible teaches us that God the Holy Ghost moves in and begins working in us. “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” {I Corinthians 6:19}

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” {Philippians 2:13}

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” {Philippians 1:6}

The Bible says: Enoch had this testimony, that he pleased God. I have done my best to preach a life changing gospel. I have tried to teach my children that when a person is truly born again God transforms their lives. But I have had to constantly battle confusing testimonies.

One modern evangelist sarcastically said: “I wonder if you have ever heard a testimony like this, ‘I gave my heart to Jesus when I was a child, then I became involved in drugs, robbery, muggings, rape, murder, pornography, torture, gambling, money laundering, adultery, perjury, treason, extortion, and other things I’d rather not mention. I was filled with anger, hatred and greed, but all the time I knew the Lord and gave my heart back to Him when I was forty years old.” {Ray Comfort}

That is a confusing testimony… and I guess it would be humorous, if it wasn’t so close to reality.

I’ve heard these kinds of testimonies often, such as: “I was saved when I was eight… I got away from God and lived like the devil until I was twenty something, and then I got ‘back in church’ or ‘I rededicated.”

When I hear such a testimony I cannot help but wonder where the Holy Spirit was for all those years. Did he quit working? Did He stop performing a “good work” in these people, for five, ten, sometimes twenty years? As one preacher said “It’s hard to get away from Someone when He is living inside you.”

I know a person can get ‘sideways’ on God, and I realize that we all grow at different rates. I also understand that young people are capable of behaving …well, like young people. They can make mistakes, life altering, deep scarring mistakes. {And so can older folks}

The “I was backslidden for six, ten or twelve years, etc” kind of testimony is confusing, and I believe, unscriptural.  These types of testimonies suggest that the Holy Spirit can lie dormant {for the want of better words} in a person for years without any intervention. These testimonies deny the explosive, life changing power of the gospel. A testimony is a very powerful thing. Paul could have preached a text and a three point outline to King Agrippa but instead as on other occasions he gave his testimony. {Acts 26}

I am not trying to make anyone doubt their salvation or make anybody upset, but I believe these confusing testimonies are not helpful. I truly believe that they hurt the cause of Christ. I’m just about to the point that I think I would jump for joy if one these individuals said something like this, “I made a profession when I was twelve but then I got out of church and lived for myself until I was twenty five…when I came back everyone told me that I had rededicated, but I believe that is when I was saved.” I know that my making such a statement will make some people cringe, but surely it must be admitted that a testimony like that makes more sense in light of the Scriptures. I’m not trying to make a loophole for lost “church people”, but I would feel more comfortable with a testimony like that than the other kind.

Some people are saved out of a religious or church environment but they still should have a testimony. Consider the Wesley brothers, their father was a minister and they both were active in religious duties. They even went to Georgia as missionaries to the Indians, but they were both unconverted.

John Wesley said; “I had many remarkable returns to prayer, especially when I was in trouble. I had many sensible comforts, which are indeed no other than short anticipations of the life of faith. But I was still under the law, not under grace: the state most who are called Christians are content to live and die in. For I was only striving with, not freed from sin; neither had I the witness of the Spirit with my spirit, and indeed could not, for I sought it not by faith, but (as it were) by the works of the law.”

He also said, “I went to America, to convert the Indians; but O! who shall convert me?”

His brother Charles wrote these words in a hymn after his conversion; “Long my imprisoned sprit lay, fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.”

Many years ago an old puritan writer stated something like this: “More significant than when the Son came up in your heart, is your answer to the question, Is the Son risen in your heart now?”

Or, as I heard one preacher say; “Don’t tell me when you were saved; tell me this, is He saving you now?”

A walk that is worthy beats out a “date and a time” any day {Ephesians 4:1}.  Many people can rattle off a date when they made a profession or proceeded to an altar, but their “walk” talks louder than their profession.

I recently read an article entitled, I’m a Jesus People. I suppose it was written during the hippie days. I submit the following excerpt:

“Certainly I am always pleased to hear that one has come to Christ for salvation, but being of a suspicious nature, brought about by so much superficial Christianity and high pressure commitments to Christ, I always look for results. I look for the change. Words mean little unless backed by deeds. If there is no change, or, if the change is of a temporary nature, there is really no reason to believe that one has received Christ and has become a “Jesus People”. Meeting together and quoting the Scriptures isn’t enough. It takes an absolute about face; a turning from one direction to another …”Those who drink booze, smoke the weed, pop pills, shoot heroin, live in adultery, commit fornication, curse and still claim to be a “Jesus People” are guilty of blasphemy and are in danger of committing the eternal sin”

I’m not trying to “put God in a box” nor do I claim to know His timetable when dealing with men. But I do know what happened to me. I also know what happened to the woman at the well, Zacchaeus, the Philippian jailer and the Apostle Paul and others in the Bible. We read in the book of Acts that a young woman followed Paul, crying; “These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.”  She probably couldn’t have said anything more truthful. Her testimony was correct, dead on, but her life didn’t match her words, and that grieved the Apostle Paul.

Paul said, “For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:” {Philippians 3:18}

I know some people almost sigh when the following text is given, but it’s still in the Bible,

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” {II Corinthians 5:17}

Is that your testimony? When you believed on the Lord Jesus Christ did He make you a new creature? Have your eyes been opened? Were you turned from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God?

williamboothWilliam Booth {Founder of the Salvation Army} died in the year 1912. He had travelled over five million miles and preached over 60,000 sermons. His body lay in state for three days as 150,000 people filed passed his casket. Forty thousand people attended his funeral service including former thieves, tramps, and harlots.

Among the mourners was Queen Mary, who arrived without warning. She sat at the rear of the hall, next to a prostitute. The prostitute whispered to the Queen, not realizing to whom she was speaking and said ; “I was a harlot …He told me “when you get to heaven Mary Magdalene will give you one of the best places.” and then she said to the Queen  “He cared for the likes of us”.

Mans Thoughts vs. Gods Thoughts

I was having one of those “deep” theological discussions with a friend the other day, {well…okay, it was as deep as an self-educated Baptist preacher like myself could go} and he said something that got me to thinking. We were talking about some controversial doctrines and he said that he felt that they weren’t “logical”. That got me thinking, should we be surprised that that Gods ways of doing things doesn’t match up with our “logic”?

Read what God says about our thoughts, our “logic”.  “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” {Isaiah 55:8, 9} 

Many things in the Bible go against human logic, including salvation by grace. That is why grace is so amazing! Have you read the book of Job …does it seem logical to the human mind? Some time ago I decided to quit trying to “explain away” parts of the Bible that to me weren’t “logical”. If I don’t understand something in the Word of God, I just say so. I’ve decided to believe the Word of God even if goes against my thoughts or logic.

Consider the words of Leonard Ravenhill;

If you want to go up, you must go down.
If you exalt yourself, I’ll abase you.
Be abased, and I will exalt you.
Save you life, you’ll lose it.
Lose you life, you’ll save it.” It’s reverse logic.

Leonard Ravenhill said Gods ways are “reverse logic”!

Or consider the words of Spurgeon;

“My love of consistency with my own doctrinal views is not great enough to allow me knowingly to alter a single text of Scripture. I have great respect for orthodoxy, but my reverence for inspiration is far greater. I would sooner a hundred times over appear to be inconsistent with myself than be inconsistent with the word of God. I never thought it to be any very great crime to seem to be inconsistent with myself; for who am I that I should everlastingly be consistent?” From the sermon; Salvation by Knowing the Truth by C. H. Spurgeon

To those who place human thoughts and logic above Gods word, Paul replies; “Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?”{Romans 9:20}

Dangerous Ground

RoyalG_89_Pg133“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” {Revelation 22:18-19}

Recently several preachers have claimed to hear God audibly. By that I mean they have claimed to hear the voice of God with their physical ears. I will not mention their names because they come from different backgrounds and affiliations but none are from a charismatic background. And one of these men has been a dear friend to me and big influence in my life. Seeing as how in just the past few months I have heard more than one man say “God told me thus and thus ” or  “I heard God speak in a audible voice”  it must be a growing trend.

I do not think that these some of these men realize the danger of making such claims publicly. I believe these claims occur for a few different reasons.

I think some of these men walk so close with their God that it “seems” as though He spoke to them audibly.

I think some of these men are using this experience as a way of expressing some sort of spiritual superiority, sort of a rite of passage or a bragging point.

I think some of these men may have heard a real audible voice but it was not His voice.

That is just what I think and $1.06 and my opinion will buy you a small cup of coffee.

But I will tell you what I know. To claim that the God of the Bible spoke to you audibly is a serious claim. If God did actually speak to you, His words to you are on par with scripture are they not? If God did speak to someone in an audible voice like he did Paul or Peter should we not consider what God said audibly as Divine revelation?

“God spoke to me.” “God told me.” “I heard God say”

I believe these types of statements are very dangerous ground.

There is a difference between communing with God and saying that God spoke to you audibly. There is a difference between, “God impressed upon my heart” and “God told me”.

There is a difference between “God spoke to my heart” and “God said to me”

I believe in experience. I believe God does speak to His children. I believe that a person can get very close to God. So close in fact that He seems to be almost physically present. On more than one occasion I have felt His presence in an indescribable way both in private and in corporate settings.

When a person publicly states that God spoke to him or her audibly, my guard goes up. It frightens me. I get the impression that something is not quite right.

Jonathan Edwards lived in the 18th century. He was a very conservative Calvinist who had seen God move in a Great Awakening in New England. He was the direct opposite of a fanatic. But in his writings you will find that he had some very deep and emotional encounters with his God.

I give a couple of instances below,

“Once, as I rode out into the woods for my health, in 1737, having alighted from my horse in a retired place, as my manner commonly has been, to walk for divine contemplation and prayer, I had a view that for me was extraordinary, of the glory of the Son of God, as Mediator between God and man, and his wonderful, great, full, pure and sweet grace and love, and meek and gentle condescension. This grace that appeared so calm and sweet, appeared also great above the heavens. The person of Christ appeared ineffably excellent with an excellency great enough to swallow up all thought and conception … which continued as near as I can judge, about an hour; which kept me the greater part of the time in a flood of tears, and weeping aloud. I felt an ardency of soul to be, what I know not otherwise how to express, emptied and annihilated; to lie in the dust, and to be full of Christ alone; to love him with a holy and pure love; to trust in him; to live upon him; to serve and follow him; and to be perfectly sanctified and made pure, with a divine and heavenly purity.”

“I have many times had a sense of the glory of the third person in the Trinity, in his office of Sanctifier; in his holy operations, communicating divine light and life to the soul. God, in the communications of his Holy Spirit, has appeared as an infinite fountain of divine glory and sweetness; being full, and sufficient to fill and satisfy the soul; pouring forth itself in sweet communications; like the sun in its glory, sweetly and pleasantly diffusing light and life.”

Yes, I believe God still communes with His people. And I believe we should pursue a closer and experiential walk with Him. But we ought to be more careful how we speak about it. – Shawn

“We find the children of God sometimes upon very high places—their spiritual life is vigorous and their inward joy is abounding. When we give you descriptions of saints in that condition, many of the Little-Faiths at once cry out, “Alas, I know nothing of this! Would God it were so with me! “They Allure Through the Lust of the Flesh”

There is a new movement in “Christianity” and eventually it will make its way to your neck of the woods. It has been called different names, but for convenience sake, in this article I will call it The Emerging Church. The leaders in this movement have publically stated that they are out to recruit the children and grandchildren of fundamentalists.  One of the emerging leaders is Mark Driscoll the pastor of Mars Hill church in Seattle, Washington. Mars Hill has over 7000 in attendance.

The New York Times magazine recently published an article about Mark Driscoll entitled “Who Would Jesus Smack Down?” by Molly Worthen {I wasn’t sure what the term “smack down” meant so I did some research. It is a professional (?) wrestling term that means to beat somebody up – Bro. Shawn}.

I hope you will please take the time to read this entire article.

Here are a few excerpts from Miss Worthen’s report.

“In the lobby one Sunday not long ago, college kids in jeans — some sporting nose rings or kitchen-sink dye jobs — lounged on ottomans and thumbed text messages to their friends. The front desk, black and slick, looked as if it ought to offer lattes rather than Bibles and membership pamphlets. Buzz-cut and tattooed security guards mumbled into their headpieces and directed the crowd toward the auditorium, where the worship band was warming up for an hour of hymns with Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.”

“Driscoll has been called the cussing Pastor because of his vulgarity and salty language. An “Under 17 Requires Adult Permission” warning flashes before the video cuts to evening services at Mars Hill…”

“He {Driscoll} came to admire Martin Luther, the vulgar, beer-swilling theological rebel who sparked the Reformation. “I found him to be something of a mentor,” Driscoll says. “I didn’t have all the baggage he did. But you can see him with a quill in one hand and a drink in the other. He married a brewer and renegade nun. His story is kind of indie rock.”

“Driscoll disdains the prohibitions of traditional evangelical Christianity. Taboos on alcohol, smoking, swearing and violent movies have done much to shape American Protestant culture — a culture that he has called the domain of “chicks and some chickified dudes with limp wrists.” Moreover, the Bible tells him that to seek salvation by self-righteous clean living is to behave like a Pharisee. Unlike fundamentalists who isolate themselves, creating “a separate culture where you live in a Christian cul-de-sac,” as one spiky-haired member named Andrew Pack puts it, Mars Hillians {those who attend Mars Hill Church – SD} pride themselves on friendships with non-Christians. They tend to be cultural activists who play in rock bands and care about the arts, living out a long Reformed tradition that asserts Christ’s mandate over every corner of creation.”

Joseph Laycock in his article Hyper-Muscular Christianity writes the following concerning Driscoll: In Seattle, self-described “charismatic Calvinist” Mark Driscoll preaches that “Jesus is a prize fighter with a tattoo down His leg, a sword in His hand, and the willingness to make someone bleed.  That is a guy I can worship…I cannot worship a guy I can beat up.”

“Driscoll says, “Restrictive Christians go too far and name everything a universal sin, forbidding some culture activities that the Bible does not, such as listening to certain musical styles, getting tattoos, watching movies, smoking cigarettes, consuming alcohol, and body piercing” (The Radical Reformission, p. 103).”

“Mars Hill {church} shows R-rated movies. In fact, Driscoll says that some of his sermons on sex are R-rated and that visiting youth groups have been embarrassed and walked out half-way through the message”

So… let me ask you; Is this the future of Christianity?  

In a few years, I believe a great majority of  “fundamental”  churches in my area will have moved in the direction of the Mars Hill Church. Some already have. They will have to in order to survive. Here is why in my opinion,

Many of our church members regularly watch PG and R-rated movies.

Many of our church members enjoy country and rock music.

Many of our church members believe it doesn’t matter how you dress.

Many of our church members don’t see anything wrong with being tattooed.

Many of our church members don’t see anything wrong with having a drink or two.

Many of our church members don’t see anything wrong with cussing and using off colored language and telling vulgar stories.

Maybe it’s different where you are, but that is what I see from a lot of Baptist church folk, {not to mention the other denominations} especially the younger crowd.

I believe the Emergent church movement will attract a lot of people, people who are sick of the hypocrisy. It will attract people who are tired of acting one way on Saturday night and another way on Sunday morning. I think it will be “a breath of fresh air” for a lot of people. No more pretending. Now they will be able to behave in church like they behave the rest of the week. And they will find a pastor lives just like they do.

Pastor Mark Driscoll likes to say his church is “theologically conservative and culturally liberal”.

In other words “our theology is conservative but we live like the rest of the world”.  No matter how you label your theology if it doesn’t change your life, it’s not Biblical.

It really boils down to the philosophy of moral relativism. {The belief that concepts such as right and wrong, goodness and badness, or truth and falsehood are not absolute but change from culture to culture and situation to situation. – Encarta Dictionary} There is no definite right or wrongs.

Unregenerate people will always bring forth corrupt fruit. These “church people” will call evil good and good evil. That is why we are going to have a deluge of cussing, drinking preachers and church members just like them. {Like people, like priest Hosea 4:9}

May I give a small word of personal testimony?

When God saved me…

I realized I couldn’t drink alcohol any longer.

I realized I couldn’t cuss anymore.

I realized I couldn’t use off colored language anymore.

I realized I couldn’t watch television with foul language and nudity anymore.

I realized I had to get rid of all my country and rock music.

And I didn’t even have to go to discipleship class for a year to find these things out.

Someone had moved in when I was born again and He is performing in my life, and He will continue to perform until the day of Jesus Christ. {Philippians 1:6}

“But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.” {Romans 6:22}

What about these false teachers and licentious “believers”?

The Bible says “…they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.” –  Bro. Outlaw Books

12437276173138666Years ago, when I was first called to preach, some preacher friends let me read what I will call “outlaw books”. These were books that would not be accepted by most Independent Fundamental Baptist. The books basically exposed our shallow evangelism and phony conversions. The preachers who gave them to me in all likelihood never dreamed that I would take their “outlaw books” seriously. {Looking back it doesn’t seem that they took them too seriously} Some of the authors leaned toward Arminian-ism and others were Calvinistic. But I believe their message is still much needed. I recommend them to you with the prayer that they will set your soul on fire as they have mine.

Unreasonable and Wicked Men

And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith. But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.                     II Thessalonians 3:2-3

Christians never have the right to be unreasonable. According to the Bible it is a sign or indication of being lost. David ran across an unreasonable man by the name of Nabal. The Bible calls him a churlish man and even his name means “fool”. He came to a bad end.

According to Webster’s 1828 dictionary to be churlish means to be rude, surly, unfeeling, uncivil, selfish, harsh etc. Churlishness is not a fruit of the Spirit. I am sure all of us have had a bad day or two but we have no right to take it out on others. We are to be Christians even in the most difficult of circumstances. To be unreasonable and harsh will hurt others and eventually hurt ourselves. If we can be kind and friendly at church on Sunday morning then we can be kind in our homes and on the job Monday morning. To be otherwise is to be a hypocrite.
