Mans Thoughts vs. Gods Thoughts

I was having one of those “deep” theological discussions with a friend the other day, {well…okay, it was as deep as an self-educated Baptist preacher like myself could go} and he said something that got me to thinking. We were talking about some controversial doctrines and he said that he felt that they weren’t “logical”. That got me thinking, should we be surprised that that Gods ways of doing things doesn’t match up with our “logic”?

Read what God says about our thoughts, our “logic”.  “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” {Isaiah 55:8, 9}

Many things in the Bible go against human logic, including salvation by grace. That is why grace is so amazing! Have you read the book of Job …does it seem logical to the human mind? Some time ago I decided to quit trying to “explain away” parts of the Bible that to me weren’t “logical”. If I don’t understand something in the Word of God, I just say so. I’ve decided to believe the Word of God even if goes against my thoughts or logic.                       Consider the words of Leonard Ravenhill;                                                                                 “He {Jesus} said, ‘the way into My kingdom is:                                                                        If you want to go up, you must go down.                                                                                   If you exalt yourself, I’ll abase you.                                                                                           Be abased, and I will exalt you.                                                                                              Save you life, you’ll lose it.                                                                                                        Lose your life, you’ll save it.’ It’s reverse logic.”

Leonard Ravenhill said Gods ways are “reverse logic”!

Or consider the words of Spurgeon;

“My love of consistency with my own doctrinal views is not great enough to allow me knowingly to alter a single text of Scripture. I have great respect for orthodoxy, but my reverence for inspiration is far greater. I would sooner a hundred times over appear to be inconsistent with myself than be inconsistent with the word of God. I never thought it to be any very great crime to seem to be inconsistent with myself; for who am I that I should everlastingly be consistent?” From the sermon; Salvation by Knowing the Truth by C. H. Spurgeon

To those who place human thoughts and logic above Gods word, Paul replies; “Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?”{Romans 9:20}

I have quit trying to make God fit in my box.  {first published, Dec 2007}
