Four Reasons Why There is No Hope in the Pope

Francis_Inauguration_fc10

We have heard much lately about the office of the pope. Let me first say that there is not one word in the Bible concerning the office of pope. It is an unbiblical office.

The truth needs to be stated and restated concerning the Roman Catholic “church” and its leader. I do not say these things because I hate people with other belief systems I say these things to educate and warn. I view Catholicism as a cult, the largest cult in the world. Catholics need to be delivered from the false teachings of their “church” so-called.

“Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” {Galatians 4:16}

One reason there is no hope in the pope is because he accepts worship. People bow down before him, kiss his ring, praise him and exalt him like he is something more than just a man. Jesus said, “… Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.” {Matthew 4:10}

He, like Herod in the book of Acts sits on a throne in his royal apparel and the people worship him as a god.

The second reason that there is no hope in the pope is because he accepts blasphemous names or titles. He is called “Holy Father” and should not be called holy nor should he be called father.

Revelation 15:4 states that only God is holy and Jesus said in Matthew 23:9 to call no spiritual or religious leader father.

He is also called the “Vicar of Christ”. Consider the definition of vicar – a person appointed or authorized to perform the functions of another. This man claims to be appointed to perform the functions of Jesus Christ!

The Catholic Encyclopedia defines the term “Vicar of Christ as “…a title of the pope implying his supreme and universal primacy, both of honor and of jurisdiction, over the Church of Christ.”

The pope claims to be the supreme head of the church. But the Bible tells us that Jesus Christ has put all things under His feet and that He is the head of the church.

As the “Vicar of Christ” the pope believes that he along with other priest that he can forgive sins.

“Pope John Paul II on Tuesday dismissed the “wide-spread idea that one can obtain forgiveness directly from God” and exhorted Catholics to confess more often to their priests.” {Los Angeles Times, December 12, 1984}

The third reason there is no hope in the pope is because he teaches a false gospel.

Roman Catholics as a rule believe that a person is saved through good works and through baptism and other rituals or sacraments etcetera. {Ephesians 2:8-9}

They teach baptism is regeneration. The Catholic Encyclopedia states that baptism is “the Sacrament of regeneration or that institution of Christ by which we are reborn to spiritual life.”

The pope teaches salvation by works.

The following is the summary of Cannons 11, 12, 24, 30, 32 from the Council of Trent concerning Justification;

“Official Catholic teaching would not allow the sinner to rely by faith on the mercy of God or to believe that his sins are forgiven for Christ’s sake only. Something more is required. You must keep yourself justified by your own good works. You must merit grace and eternal life by your works. You must pay the debt of sins by your penance and your purgatorial sufferings.”

The Pope teaches a false gospel.

Reason number four is that the pope practices and promotes idolatry. a. He worships Mary and his follower’s bow down to images and statues and relics. The Bible says, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” {1 John 5:21}

Revelation 9:20 “And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk…”

Webster’s 1828 dictionary defines an idol as…

“An image, form or representation, usually of a man or other animal, consecrated as an object of worship; a pagan deity. Idols are usually statues or images, carved out of wood or stone, or formed of metals, particularly silver or gold.”

“Any thing on which we set our affections; that to which we indulge an excessive and sinful attachment.”

“An idol is any thing which usurps the place of God in the hearts of his rational creatures.”

The Roman Catholic church is a system of idolatry and the pope himself is an idol and an idol worshipper.

The truth is…

The pope is just a man.

He cannot forgive sins.

He is not the Head of the church.

He does not have the authority to overrule scripture.

He is an imposter….and has deceived 1.2 billion people.

“I Am Abandoned by God”

200px-KJV-King-James-Version-Bible-first-edition-title-page-1611The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. Isaiah 40:8

Men may scorn the Word of God but there is coming a day when every person will stand before God. {Revelation 20:11-14}

The famed atheist Voltaire said, “”One hundred years from my day there will not be a Bible in the earth except one that is looked upon by an antiquarian curiosity seeker.”

He once said about Jesus Christ, “Curse the wretch”

Voltaire was mistaken; After his death his house in Paris was used by the British Bible Society and later on by the French Bible Society.

Voltaire, on his deathbed said; “I am abandoned by God and man. I will give you half of what I am worth, if you will give me six months’ life.”

His doctor replied

“Sir, you cannot live six weeks.”

Voltaire replied, “Then I shall go to hell, and you will go with me.”

He cried out, “I am abandoned by God and man! I shall go to hell! O Christ! O Jesus Christ!”

Apparently not long after the preceding declarations Voltaire breathed his last.

The nurse who attended Voltaire on his death bed said

“For all the wealth in Europe I would not see another infidel die.”

How many people will joke about eternity and meeting God and then go out into a Christ-less eternity and in the words of Voltaire be “abandoned by God”?

…My Strength is Made Perfect in Weakness

“…Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” II Corinthians 12:10

The Apostle Paul in this passage is speaking of his “thorn in the flesh”. God had allowed a physical malady to keep the Apostle weak. What strikes me as unique is Paul’s attitude towards God’s will in his life. After asking God three times for healing, God let Paul know that His grace was sufficient.

There are a couple things worth considering here in my opinion.                                             #1 God’s ways are definitely not mans ways.                                                                               #2 Paul trusted God and really did believe that God allowed these things to occur for a good reason.

Paul’s attitude is really something for me to consider when I am bellyaching and whining about my own circumstances.

The Apostle said, “Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” and “…I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”                                                                                                                                         This attitude of the Apostle Paul goes against the flesh, human nature and pride. And it contradicts much of what is called Christianity today.

It is not paved with triumph, though it is to end in victory. The termination is glory, honor, and immortality; horatiusbonarbut on the way, there is the thorn in the flesh, the sackcloth, and the cross. Recompense yonder; but labor here! Rest yonder; but weariness here! Joy and security yonder; but here endurance and watchfulness—the race, the battle, the burden, the stumbling block, and oft-times the heavy heart.” Horatius Bonar (1808-1889)

The Duty of an Overseer.

220px-Rumunia_5806“Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.”   Acts 20:28-30

The word overseer is only used one time in the New Testament. It is from the Greek word “Episkopos” which is translated bishop six times in our King James Bible according to Strong’s Concordance.

Also according to Strong’s the New Testament uses the terms  bishop, elders, and presbyters interchangeably. I wouldn’t begin to try to sort all that out in this brief article. But from the above passage I believe it is clear that Paul is speaking to the elders {plural… chew on that a minute} of the church at Ephesus and that he calls them the overseers of the flock. He tells them what they are supposed to do. Their duty if you will.

First, he says to make sure or take heed to feed themselves and the church. That is what an overseer is to do. Feed the flock or the church to which you have been appointed. Paul puts emphasis on the fact that Jesus Christ hath purchased the church of God with His own blood. An overseer has the great responsibility of feeding the blood bought church of God. In other words, if I understand this correctly, Paul is saying, “make sure everyone gets fed”.

Secondly, he warns against wolves entering into the church and destroying the flock. The wolves here described are very destructive. The apostle calls them “grievous” wolves meaning they are “violent, cruel, and unsparing”. He also says that there would be men {some who may have been standing right in front of him} who would pervert the Bible and try to cause the church to split.

Things have not changed in two thousand years. Churches still need overseers or elders to protect them from the wolves and false teaching. I think Paul gives the strategy for battling wolves and false teaching in his warning to the Ephesians elders… feed the church. Churches need the teaching and preaching of the Word of God. That is what the Apostle is talking about when he says,  “feed the church of God”  Every church needs an overseer {overseers?} to feed it. That is the New Testament pattern. A church without an overseer or that has an unworthy overseer is probably a half-starved church and is doubtless at risk to eat some bad spiritual food and there is a lot of unhealthy food out there. A church without an overseer is also fair game for wolves both from without and from within.

There Is No Struggle Within

 “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” I John 5:13

This is probably one of the most misused verses in the Bible today. This verse is often used by “soulwinners” to “give assurance” to someone after “leading them to the Lord”. In another words, a person agrees to a list of facts from the Bible, repeats a prayer and then he or she is “given assurance” with the abovementioned verse.

There are several problems with this flimflam evangelism. As a matter of fact I would say there is not too much of a Biblical element in the whole scheme. I believe the plight of modern day fundamental Christianity can, for the most part, be traced back to our salesman like preaching and soul winning methods. {And we are in a plight in case you didn’t know.} One fundamentalist leader said not long ago, “this is Fundamentalism’s finest hour” It may be “ fundamentalism’s” finest hour but true Biblical Christianity has certainly seen better days. He is just another typical “yes man” doing what yes men do, not admitting that the emperor is naked.

Many Baptist have been taught how to win “converts” without the Holy Ghost. Many of our churches are filled with people who are religious but lost. Scores of of our churches are no different than the cults they rail against. They are made up of deceived people who have accepted another gospel and another Christ. The late missionary James Stewart said, “Sojames_a_Stewart_img great has been the perversion that many congregations are astounded when they hear the true Gospel of the lordship of Christ. They believe that we are preaching a new gospel.”

They may have the name Baptist and carry a Bible but many of them have never been born again. They have been “given assurance” by their pastor or their mother or by the date written in the front of their Bible. I fear that many professing Christians have assurance but it is often a false assurance. This is the reason that many of our churches are so worldly. The reason many churches are going to the world for instructions is that world-lings must be entertained. In the words of Spurgeon you feed sheep but entertain goats. Many CINO’S {Christians In Name Only} do not have the Holy Ghost. Their spouse or parents or their preacher is the one who tries to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Regrettably, it has been found out the hard way that you cannot keep dogs and hogs from reverting back to their old ways. It is because they do not have a new nature. There is no struggle within. There may be a struggle with their preacher or their parents or maybe even their conscience but they only have one nature. They know nothing of the struggle that the Apostle Paul talks about in Romans chapter seven. They do not say with Paul “O wretched man that I am!” They know nothing of putting off the old man and his deeds and putting on the new man. They know nothing of a contrite heart or a repentant spirit.

Sandemanianism?

Sandemanian_graveyard,_Gayle_-_geograph.org.uk_-_1383761“Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” {James 2:18-20}

I first noticed the term Sandemanianism while reading about the Welsh Baptist Christmas Evans {1766-1838}. This was a sect of Christianity in the 19th century that basically taught that “saving faith is reduced to intellectual assent to the gospel proclamation about Christ.” In other words becoming a Christian means believing a few facts about the gospel. “There is no new thing under the sun”.  We have similar belief systems in many churches today.

But the Bible tells us that Christianity is not just believing some facts about the gospel. Christianity is more than just nodding your head to some questions and repeating a prayer or raising your hand. Christianity is a new birth with a new life and new affections. Christianity has new desires and new dislikes. True faith produces works otherwise it is only the faith of devils.

Being saved is not something you “did one time”. Being saved is trusting Jesus Christ and in His righteousness alone. It is not believing some facts about Jesus… it is believing on Jesus.

John Wesley is known as the father of the Methodist movement. He was a very religious man, an ordained preacher and a missionary before he became a Christian. He tells in his journal how that God used a Moravian pastor to show him his need of a Saviour. This excerpt is from his journal;

“Sat. Feb. 7. Mr. Oglethorpe returned from Savannah, with   Mr. Spangenberg, one of the Pastors of the Germans. I soon found what spirit he was of; and asked his advice with regard to my own conduct. He said, “My brother, I must first ask you one or two questions. Have you the witness within yourself? Does the spirit of God bear witness with your spirit, that you are a child of God?” I was surprised, and knew not what to answer. He observed it, and asked, “Do you know Jesus Christ?” I paused and said, ” I know he is the Saviour of the world.” “True; replied he; but do you know he has saved you?” I answered, “I hope he has died to save me.” He only added, “Do you know yourself?” I said, “I do.” But I fear they were vain words.”

John Wesley spoke of Christ in intellectual terms but the Moravian preacher desired that Wesley might know Christ in a personal way. Wesley was trusting in his good deeds and his religious duties to be his salvation. Salvation is not found in our good deeds or good works for the Bible says that “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags”. True salvation does not trust a plan… it trusts a Person. I am afraid that many people today who name the name of Christ only know facts about Him but do not really know Him. The Spirit of God does not bear witness with their spirit. Their faith is a dead faith.

According to the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, “The last of the Sandemanian churches in America ceased to exist in 1890.” But their teaching seems to me to be very much alive and well in America today.

To use the words of the Moravian preacher 276 years ago, “Do you know Jesus Christ?”

The Darkness

“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” {John 3:19-20}

Who could deny that we are living in an ever darkening society?
I am talking about America.
I am not talking about Stalin’s Russia or Hitler’s Germany.
I am not talking about the heathen in the jungles.
I am talking about the land in which we live.
A land that was once prosperous and safe.
40 years ago no one thought about school shootings
No one worried about Islamic terrorists.
No one thought about mall or theatre shootings.
Sexual predators weren’t a topic of conversation.
Children could walk to school and a public school was never thought of as a dangerous place{at least not physically dangerous}.
Only a fool or an idiot would deny that America has become a darker place to live.
It is not the guns.
It is not the lack of security.
It is not the need of new laws.
How many laws do you imagine a mass murderer is already breaking?
Would a few more laws stop a killer?
How about a few more signs?
imagesHow many “GUN FREE ZONE” signs do these guys walk past before they kill a bunch of innocent people and then themselves?
No, these are only stopgaps.
Many would agree with what I have said thus far but not with what I am about to say.

We are reaping {as a nation} what we have sown. We have sown to the wind and now we are reaping the whirlwind.
We have shaken our fist in the face of the God of Heaven.
We have kicked Him out of our schools, our government and many of our churches.
We have allowed our young peoples minds to be filled with sex and violence and perversion.
Our nation has glorified violence in its movies, music and video games. When they catch a sexual predator it is no surprise that his mind has been filled with pornography.
These mass murderers don’t just wake up one day and decide to go shoot up a school or a mall. The idea has been planted in their mind by someone or something.
The old adage is still true…Garbage In …Garbage Out!
Is there an answer? Is there hope?
I can give you a personal answer.
I can give you a personal hope.
The Apostle Paul said that Jesus Christ had sent him “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”
That is what He has sent every true believer to do.

Phantom Sins

makethumbdetails“…Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.” {Romans 4:7-8}

Often times those who have had a limb amputated experience a condition called phantom limb. The patient has the strong feeling that the limb is not only still present, but is also still causing them pain and discomfort. They could swear that the missing limb is still attached and even wish they could scratch an itch or massage a pain in the nonexistent limb.

Sometimes as Christians we experience a similar phenomenon. If we have truly trusted Christ as our Saviour our sins are gone. He has removed our transgressions “as far as the east is from the west”. {Psalm 103} In other words our sins are GONE. We may imagine that they are still there and at times even feel a twinge of sorrow on account of them. But they are gone. Search all you want to but they are buried beneath a crimson flood too deep to ever be discovered. No need to mention them to God because He doesn’t remember them anymore. “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” {Hebrews 8:12}

“Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?
There’s power in the blood, power in the blood;
Sin stains are lost in its life giving flow.
There’s wonderful power in the blood.”

Past, present and future…“Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.”

Do you know the peace and joy of the forgiveness of sins?

Praying for Our Nation

dan 6 - 10 his windows being open“And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments: Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.” Daniel 9:4-6

To believers these are very perilous times. There is almost a feeling of hopelessness as we watch our nation slide further into debauchery. Daniel prayed for his people. He confessed the sins of his people. Everything he said concerning the Jews is applicable to the country we live in. We have sinned. We have done wickedly. We have rebelled and departed from Gods word. We are drowning as a nation in a cesspool of immorality. As believers we must pray as Daniel prayed. We must acknowledge our sins and beg for mercy for our country. At times I think know what Isaiah was saying when he declared; “Except the Lord of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.” {Isaiah 1}

Is there any hope? As the father of four and soon {Lord willing} a grandfather I must believe so. I must, like Daniel pray for our nation. God will judge {and is judging} America just as He judged other nations in the past. “To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him…” Christians in this nation must cry out for mercy. We need wisdom and grace in an ever darkening world. If there is any help or any hope it must be from God.

“Turn thou us unto thee, O Lord, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.” {Lamentations 5:21}

Forgiven

“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses…” Colossians 2:13

Notice that one phrase at the end of this verse; “having forgiven you all trespasses”.

Notice what it does not say.

It does not say…

“He will forgive you all trespasses”

It does not say…

“He will forgive your trespasses if you will do your part”

It does not say…

“Having forgiven you for your past trespasses”

But it does say…“having forgiven you all trespasses”.

Quickened!

Made alive with Him!

And ALL {past, present and future} of my trespasses forgiven!

“Arise, my soul, arise; shake off thy guilty fears;
The bleeding sacrifice in my behalf appears:
Before the throne my surety stands,
Before the throne my surety stands,
My name is written on His hands.” – Charles Wesley

Thank You Lord,

Shawn
